Happy Easter!

Hope you are all having a fun Easter! The boys went to an Easter egg hunt this morning at church, and then the Easter bunny left more eggs at our house while they napped. The Easter bunny was kind enough to leave the eggs in the basement at our house since it's kind of chilly outside :).

Max likes to open each egg and check the treat inside before putting it in his basket. I'm sure he'll learn the more efficient "hoard now, check treats later" method at some point, but for now it's kind of sweet to see them not so competitively picking up eggs. For example, there were no body-checks. And I don't know what to say about this picture except that it cracks me up:

We also did some landscaping this weekend. Andrew put about 10 plants in the ground and laid a concrete slab from the driveway to the backyard. What a hard worker!

We also dog-sat for Tom & Krissa. Kuma and Aspen were very good girls, but since you know that Aspen's kind of a snob, they really didn't frolic around too much together. Still, they generally hung out and got along fine. At first, Max & Ben had to be carried from furniture to furniture because they were afraid to be on the ground with the two dogs, but they relaxed after about an hour or so. (And I think I caught Kuma mid-blink.)

April!

This week Grandma Jill & Grandpa Jim stopped in for a 3-night visit. They enjoyed our new guest digs in the newly finished basement, and we all had a great time just letting the grandparents & grandkids catch up. Wednesday, we all visited the Bingham Copper Mine that's right by our house. It's the world's largest open pit copper mining operation. I should've taken my camera on that little trip! Everyone had fun watching the gigantic machines (tires are 12'6'' on the trucks!) do their thing and learn about the mine (I know it doesn't sound very interesting, but it really was :) ).

The weather's been great this week, so we also just spent a lot of time outside, either playing at the park or riding bikes in the driveway. After Grandma & Grandpa hit the road this morning, the boys and I headed up to check out the SLC zoo. A very fun morning to cap off a fun week! This giraffe was very obliging to pose for the photo:

Happy Friday

Andrew's on his way home from 2 nights down in St. George. We tried to take the whole family down to enjoy the warmer weather and get in a side trip to Zion National Park, but southern Utah is really popular this time of year (I know, whod've thunk?), and all the places big enough for the whole family were booked by the time we were looking a couple of weeks ago. Oh well, we'll all get down another time.

I did several spring cleaning-type projects yesterday. One of them was going through the boys' clothes. Looks like I barely got these overalls rotated into Ben's wardrobe in time! Ben has changed so much over the last few months; he's really gone from a baby to a toddler. (I'm not trying to leave Max out of the photos, but he is once again wearing his (all together now) Thomas the Train t-shirt today :).) Here he is giggling in response to the barnyard animal sounds Max & I were making.

Slacker blogger? Yep, that's me

I'm trying to think of what's been going on since my last post....

In February, we had visitors! Andrew's cousin Matt flew in from San Francisco for a weekend of skiing over President's Day weekend. The next weekend, our good friends Adam & Karla flew in for their second visit to see us since we've moved.

And just the various other odds and ends...colds, playgroups, church stuff, doctors and dentist appointment, etc. Max went to his very first dentist appt & had no cavities - yeah!

This weekend we went downtown to the St. Patrick's Day Parade. It was a fun morning, made even better by perfect weather all weekend. Great to just get outside in the yard too. I totally have spring fever, but am resisting planting anything because we'll probably have another cold snap (or two) before spring really arrives. It is so nice to see all the little tulips and daffodils popping up though! Here are some pics from St. Patty's:

Don't Mess With Benjamin

I'm a little hesitant to post this picture for fear that Child Protective Services will come knocking on our door, but here's the shiner Ben's sporting right now:

He kind of wiped out Sunday morning while pushing his little shopping cart. He's still working on mastering forward movement while vertical.

And here's a pic of the boys. They were both sitting on the dog bed, legs stuck straight out, each reading a book. Of course, by the time I ran downstairs and then back upstairs and turned the camera on and snapped a picture, Ben started crawling away, but it was really kind of cute to see the two brothers reading away together.

We got lots of random little projects done this weekend, which feels really nice...Aspen got shots & groomed, Ben got his second dose of flu shot, we ordered window coverings for the basement, handled Andrew's passport renewal, organized toys with the help of this fun new cubby:

Andrew built stands for the top of our kitchen cupboards because the molding on the top of the cupboards is so tall it blocked our antique bowls and jars from view. Now you can see them!

Max had a fever yesterday & just hung out on the couch watching TV. He's got a pretty runny and raw nose today, but the fever's gone, but we skipped out on a Superbowl party to avoid giving everyone else the gift that keeps on giving. So now we're just watching football at home...nice quiet evening.

Ben has gone from walking about 5 or 6 steps at a time to walking across rooms this weekend. I love the very solid slap-slap-slap of toddler feet.

So excited!

OK, so we are so excited we could just jump up and down: the basement is done. Yes, you read that right, the basement is complete. We are so pleased with the results. I will call the city next week for the final inspection. Hopefully everything will be OK and we can move more furniture in. Yeah!! So here are some pics of our new space (complete with cleaning supplies and tools :) ).

Solving Another Dilemma

We also were going to have a chandelier installed in the dining room. The contractor said "no problem" when I asked if it would be possible. However, upon actually talking to the contractor's electrician, it sounded like there would be lot of cutting into sheetrock and patching involved. We were nervous about the patching because it seems like you can almost always tell there's a patch; it never blends in totally. So we decided to nix the chandelier and go with lamps instead. All of the outlets in the room are "top is hot, bottom is not," so they all flip on with the flip of a single wall-switch, which is kind of nice. An added bonus, we can take the lamps with us the next time we move. :) So here are the lamps - we thought they were actually pretty cool. I was pleasantly surprised at the options available when I was lamp shopping. Imagine them one day with some decor on them (or bric-a-brac, as Whitney says :) ), but with 2 toddlers, they are minimalist for now.

Updates...

First, some pictures of the boys. Max in his oh-so-cute jammies: Ben at dinner tonight in all his glory. Hair courtesy of banana mush (you can't really tell in the picture, but it's all slicked back and stuck to his head), and that's either a sweet potato or a peach hanging off his nose. Mmmmm!
We have turned an exciting corner at the Shier household. Since about mid-December, we have been in a transitional stage with Ben. He was only napping once a day when he really needed two, so he was therefore Mr. Crankypants most of the time and Mom was getting really frustrated. Anyways, we solved the problem a couple of weeks ago. Ben is now taking one nap a day (at the same time as Max - woo-hoo!), but we started putting him to bed really early to compensate for the sleep. He is now such a happy camper- it's wonderful! This also means that we have a newfound freedom in our days, so we have jumped in to the toddler scene. We have been having fun doing storytime and music class and all of the other fun things for little tots. Ben is now walking about 4 or 5 steps at a time and then crashing when he remembers that this is a new skill and panics. So close! Max is also very into the cooking channel lately. He gets up from his nap and the first words out of his mouth are "I want to watch cooking." His favorite is Giada.

On the home-project scene, we will be done with the basement tomorrow. Yee-ha! Our contractor finished all his work a week or so ago. Our carpet-installer got all the tack-strips and padding down today. The carpet is cut and in the basement and will be installed tomorrow. In the meantime, the house is a balmy 74 degrees to help the carpet stretch. Luckily, we have two furnaces, so the upstairs (where we sleep) is bearable. I will take some pics soon. We are so excited for it!!

Anyways, I don't want to type anymore until I get some more pictures. I know the words can get boring and the pictures are more entertaining.

What's in a word? Richard Lainhart took a last-minute package filled with
Christmas gifts to the U.S. Postal Service's self-service Salt Lake City Sunnyside branch to mail it just before Christmas. The next day, the postal carrier brought the package back to Lainhart's house as "undeliverable." The carrier said the box couldn't be mailed because it contained the label "Wine Glasses." In Utah, just the word "wine" made the contents contraband, even though they had nothing to do with wine.

A Very White Christmas

Well, we made it in and out of Colorado safely for Christmas. So many people had their holiday plans changed; we are thankful that ours were relatively unaffected. Our drive home was a bit sporty for the first 100 miles, lots of other cars spinning out, but after that, the roads were completely dry. We had a wonderful time with the family. Here are Jody & Whitney Christmas morning. They were in remarkably good moods considering that their plans for Georgia got cancelled.

The boys got a kitchen/patio set from Santa. It has a "manly" grill on the patio side. Just trying to teach the boys to follow their dad's great example - kitchens aren't just for girls!

Other random thoughts...this week I kept thinking about the idea that you get out of things what you put into them. Whether it's the little start-up church that we've been going to or just making a life and new friends in Utah, it seems to be a recurring theme. Then in church this week, the pastor spoke of "without a gardener, there is no garden." Once again, same theme...thanks God, got it.

So anyways, looking forward to what's in store for us in 2007. Happy New Year everyone!

So Much Snow!

Although we didn't get to see as many friends as we had initially planned on because of the snow, we did manage to see our old neighbors. Oh my gosh, the kids had so much fun in the snow! The family that bought our house has a little girl named Chloe who, for some reason, was really excited to see us. As our truck drove down the street, she waved her little heart out at the top of the snow hill and then ran over to greet us as we got out of the truck. She was cracking me up - what a sweetie! Wow, 4 weeks?

I can't believe it's been nearly 4 weeks since I posted anything. A couple of weeks ago, we got to see Grandma Sue on her way back to New Mexico thanks to her long layover at the SLC airport. We forgot our camera (we had a last minute flurry of activity because her flight got in 45 minutes early - good work, Delta!), but we had a nice visit over lunch.

I've been following the blizzard in Colorado the last day or so, as it affects many people in my family's holiday travel plans (ourselves included). I wish everybody giant doses of patience as you deal with the messed up airline schedules! Our 10 inches of snow last Sunday is nothing compared to their dump. Here's our patio last Sunday:

Ben is cracking me up lately. He sticks his little tongue out all the time. Maybe he just likes the feel of his teeth as they come in further?

I think we all should get fire engine chairs for haircuts.
